Penang Trip

Updated: Jun 17, 2020

3 Days 2 Nights just ain’t enough!!!! After going to Penang twice, I still have not been to Batu Ferringhi and Penang Hill.  (This shall be my priority the next time I go back). Enough said this trip was more of a food trip than a touristy trip cuz what we Malaysian do best?  EAT!!

DAY 1

We left at around 8.30 in the morning and headed towards Penang, making a pit stop in Ipoh along the way to visit Kellie’s Castle and have lunch. It was a 2+ hour drive and we spent like another 2-3 hours in Ipoh for lunch, an hour at Kellie’s Castle which was a really nice place for pictures, then we headed to a hawker stall opposite of Concubine Street called Thean Chun for lunch. We had beef noodles there and the ‘gai si hor fun’ or known as Chicken Strip Kuay Teow ( I guess this is what it is called).

FOOD REVIEW!!!

Beef Noodles – 5/10

(I didn’t really like this like the soup was pretty tasteless and this is probably a personal preference but I don’t like the intestines and stuff so sozz)

Gai Si Hor Fun – 8/10

(The soup was really nice full of taste, chicken like how chicken supposed  to be lu and the beansprout were really delicious too, definitely worth a try, made me regret ordering beef noodles….) After lunch we headed straight for Penang. We reached around 5 o’clock and the place was really lit for that price. I totally apologize for the confusion on my insta story. The place is RM199 per night and I had a RM120 promo code for the Airbnb, therefore the RM80 was per person for both days. At night we headed to Gurney Drive for dinner, honestly the food here wasn’t up to expectations, most of the food here was only decent, but there’s two dishes that stood out here.

FOOD REVIEW!!!

Fried Oyster – 8/10

(Probably the only food that I enjoyed over there, the oysters were juicy and overall it just tastes so good in your mouth)

Mochi – 7/10

(This warm desert is worth a try as it I not too gooey and the coating just blends well with the mochi) We were supposed to go to Avatar Secret Garden at night but guess what……… IT RAINED!! (Typical Malaysian weather….) so we just went back to our Airbnb and called it a day.

DAY 2

First Stop, LAKSAA. Before going into Kek Lok Si we had brunch at the famous Ayer Itam Penang Laksa

FOOD REVIEW!!!

Penang Laksa – 8/10

(Love ittt, the soup was thick and full of flavor!! It’s leaning more towards the sweet taste and the only thing holding me back from giving a higher rating is the lack of kick, only if it was abit more spicy the would hit the sweet spot) After laksa we went to Kek Lok Si temple which is just a short walk away. If you go to there as a tourist you should go up to the top of the temple (not the statue) where you get a real lovely view of the town below, a really lovely spot for pictures. After that our food trip begins, we hit the famous spots down in Georgetown and thanks to Nick and Diane for all the tips on the places definitely was spot on!! Lets get to it

Siam Road Char Koay Teow – 9/10

(Okay this Koay Teow is hand’s down the best I’ve had, we even wanted to takeaway home for the last day. There’s duck egg and chicken egg versions, but nevertheless it was great, the dish wasn’t too oily and it was really fragrant with the egg and the prawns were quite big and fresh. A MUST TRY when you are in Penang)

Penang Famous Teochew Cendol – 8/10

(This is definitely refreshing on a hot day, making it the perfect desert to serve whether you are looking for a sweet desert or just to quench your thirst, the reputation of this stall speaks for itself)

Chew Jetty Big Bowl Noodles – 6/10

(Tastes like your normal bowl of noodles but just REALLY BIG, we ordered the non-spicy soup with pork. The pork wasn’t that tender and frankly it’s just like any bowl of ramen but UPSIZED. Kudos to them for the WOW factor)

Street Grill Burger Bakar Penang – 7/10

o   This review is for their chicken burger (It’s abit pricey, there was no beef only chicken at that time, I love my burger with BEEF PATTY not chicken. But the things that I love about this burger is that the combination of sauce was nice and the CHEESE WAS REALLY GOOD! Plus they didn’t use chicken patty for the burger they actually used the chicken chop kinda chicken inside their chicken burger.)

Chinahouse – 8/10 for the Tiramisu

o   We ordered 4 different cakes (Heads up the cakes here are big like really big, we ordered 4 and had to pack back one, personally I loved the tiramisu which according to them was a house speciality. I can’t really rate the rest as I have never ate them before) After our day long food adventure was over we didn’t have time to head to Batu Ferringhi which was part of the itenarary for the day

DAY 3

We supposed to go to Penang Hill in the morning to watch the sunrise, but as usual we couldn’t haul our lazy ass up and slept till 10. We checked out of the Airbnb and went for brunch at this road side café which was actually just a small alley which they set up shop and it was FULL of people. Like every single table was crammed and there was a line waiting outside.

FOOD REVIEW!!!

Toh Soon Café – 6/10

(The food here is good and the place is pretty unique but the place is abit crowded and you’d have to wait awhile for a place to seat and even after that the food takes quite some time to arrive, but nevertheless the place is worth dropping by.) After that we took a stop to buy some biscuits and we were on our way.
